Japanese Pagoda Tree

This is the explanation from the Encyclopedia Britannica:
any of several trees of erect, conical form suggesting a pagoda, particularly Sophora japonica, commonly called the Japanese pagoda tree, or the Chinese scholar tree. A member of the pea family (Fabaceae), it is native to East...
Oddly enough - the tree is not native to Japan!!!

Why is it called a Pagoda Tree? It doesn't appear to be shaped like a pagoda.
