Chambers Family

Three items on the Chambers family. Ike (below left) and his son Charlie in about 1932. Ike had been head groundsman since 1884, with Charlie taking over that year. In 1955, Ike's other son Walter took over grounds duties. They are all pictured below - the scans are not that clear, but if you click on the individual pictures you can read the story and captions.

Thanks Mike. I remember Walter as ruling with an iron fist - he would not let juniors play on the grass and would routinely suspend us for the day due to rather mundane offenses - such as dripping water on the clay courts (from our bathing suit under our whites), having too much fun (true) and being seen and heard.

Czar Buras the Terrible is a benign despot in comparison.

Ha.

Another great horticultural highlight by his highness (I'm betting).

When you decide to retire from your pursuit of grounds keeping excellence, there's a career for you in photography, for sure.

Your humble hombre from the Hill.

Cheers

Another great picture - how about a year end picture of the lads?
